Do epoxy river tables last?
Yes. A well-built river table lasts as long as any good solid wood table. What matters is how it's built: dry wood, steel underneath, and the right finish. After that, all it needs from you is coasters and a gentle wipe-down.
What makes a river table last
Kiln-dried wood
I only use kiln-dried slabs. Drying the wood in a kiln takes out most of the moisture that makes wood shrink, swell, and crack.
Steel underneath
Almost every table I build has steel C-channels set into slots cut in the underside and screwed in place, running across the grain. Wood still moves a tiny bit with the seasons, but the steel holds the top flat, so you'll never see the movement and the top won't warp.
Epoxy made for river pours
I pour with Ecopoxy and TotalBoat, two brands made for deep river pours, and I make sure the finished river has no air bubbles, or so few you'd have to hunt for them.
A finish that fits how you live
The finish is what you touch every day, so I match it to the look you want:
- Rubio Monocoat: one of the toughest and most popular finishes, with a natural, low-sheen look.
- Odie's Oil: more sheen, still with a natural wood feel.
- Polyurethane: the glossiest option.
Does epoxy turn yellow?
Both epoxies I use are made to resist yellowing from UV light, so a table in a normal room keeps its color. If yours will sit in front of a big, sunny window, tell me and we'll plan for it.
Can you put hot dishes on it?
No. Epoxy softens with heat, so use coasters under mugs and trivets or pot holders under hot dishes.
Will it scratch?
Like any wood table, it can. The finish stands up to everyday use, and if the top gets worn after years at the dinner table, it can be sanded and refinished to look new.
How do you clean a river table?
- Wipe it with a soft cloth, warm water, and a little dish soap.
- Don't use any other cleaners or chemicals.
- There's no need to scrub. The finish seals the wood, so spills and bacteria stay on the surface and wipe right off.
My 2-year promise
If your tabletop cracks, warps, or the epoxy pulls away from the wood within 2 years of delivery, I'll repair it at no charge. This covers how the table was built. It doesn't cover heat marks, scratches, or damage from harsh cleaners.
Refinishing, years from now
When your table starts to show years of use, call me before anyone else touches it. I know the wood, the epoxy, and the finish on every table I build, so I can bring it back the way it left my shop. Refinishing is quoted per table.

Tell me about your space and the look you want, and I'll help you pick the wood, the river color, and the finish.
